Document management systems are filing cabinets, not graphs. You can find a doc by name. You cannot ask “what did we argue last time something like this came up?” The question is unanswerable until a partner with twenty years at the firm happens to remember.

The institutional memory of a law firm is scattered across email, Slack, Word documents on twenty partners' devices, and a DMS that nobody trusts to be complete. Whoever has been at the firm longest is the search index. When they retire, the index walks out the door with them.

Public-LLM tools are a non-starter. Every keystroke is a potential breach. In-house counsel won't approve them; partners won't trust them. The firms that need this capability the most are the ones structurally blocked from the off-the-shelf product.
